The castle in Brodnica is the former seat of the Brodnica komturs. Construction – probably of a wooden stronghold – began around 1285, and the brick Gothic castle was built in two stages: between 1305 and 1317 the perimeter walls of the outer bailey and the castle were erected, and between 1312 and 1339 the entire defensive complex was completed (in 1339 the castle chapel was consecrated).
The castle was damaged by a flood in 1388, and after the siege during the Hunger War (1414) its fortifications were modernized by Mikołaj Fallenstein. In 1454 it was taken by Polish troops. From 1481 it served as the seat of royal starosts – from 1485 to 1604 the Działyński family, and from 1605 to 1625 Princess Anna Vasa.
Today the Museum in Brodnica presents two permanent exhibitions in the castle cellars: „The Brodnica region in the Middle Ages” and „Sculptures and architectural details from the castle chapel”. The castle is also the start and finish of the city game "Following Brodnica's monuments".
